Theodore Burgh

Theodore W. Burgh (Teddy) is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, Wilmington, NC. He has a BA in music from Hampton University, Hampton, VA, MA in Religious Studies from Howard University, Washington, DC, and an MA and PhD in Archaeology from the University of Arizona, Tucson.

Theodore composes, performs, and teaches music. He has shared the stage with a number of artists, including Ray Charles, Pat Upton (Member of the group Spiral Starecase and writer of the timeless classic, “I Love You More Today than Yesterday”), Kathy Sledge (Member of the group Sister Sledge and singer of timeless anthem, “We are Family”), as well as numerous others.

Theodore is also a photographer and artist. One of his special interests is archaeomusicology, also known as music archaeology. His book Listening to the Artifacts: Music Culture in Ancient Palestine, published with T&T Clark/Continuum Press, received the Klaus Wachsmann Award from the Society of Ethnomusicology. Is God Funky or What? Black Biblical Culture and Contemporary Popular Music, published with Peter Lang Publishers, NY, is his most recent academic work. He has also published the novel, Yes, I Killed Rev. Tremmel, a coming of age mystery novel centered on a murder in Georgia during the '70s.
